MOUNT EVEREST
Will Cross is now on his third attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 29,035 feet(8,850 meters). He is on his way to become the first person in the world who is living with diabetes to climb the tallest mountain on every continent and trek to the North and South poles. If he succeeds, he’ll also be the first American (with or without diabetes) to complete the challenge.
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 29,035 feet(8,850 meters).
The difficulties of climbing Mount Everest are extreme and legendary. Massive snow and ice avalanches are the biggest and most constant threat that Will may face at Everest. The avalanches roll off the peaks repeatedly, burying valleys, glaciers, and climbing routes used by climbers. Hurricane-force winds that can collapse and rip tents to shreds will also add to the dangers. Hypothermia, is a major problem in this with the high winds and low temperatures.
Another hazard facing Will is the famous Khumbu icefall, which is located not far above the Base Camp. The icefall is created by the rapid movement of the glaciers over the steep rocks underneath. The movement ruptures the ice into large, pointed masses of ice, cliffs and columns separated by huge crevasses.
The climate of Mount Everest is naturally extreme. In January, the coldest month, the summit temperature averages about -36° C (about -33° F) and can drop as low as -60° C (-76° F). In July, the warmest month, the average summit temperature is -19° C (-2° F). At no time of the year does the temperature on the summit rise above freezing.
Climbing Everest is a very strictly regulated process by both the Chinese and Nepalese governments.
